John Helm

John Helm was born at Wheeling, Cook Co., Ill., Feb.21 1843, and died at his home in Algonquin, Ill., April 14 1894. He enlisted Feb. 18, 1902, in Co c, 65th Ill., Vol. Inft. was at the surrender of Harpers' Ferry in '62, at the siege of Knoxville, Tenn., '63, with "Sherman to the Sea," with Thomas from Pulaska to Nashville, and was discharged April 18,'65. He married Mary E. Montange, July 4,1868, at Caledonia, Ill.,whom he leaves with three sons to mourn his loss. He went into the hardware business with John Peter, at Caledonia, removing the buisness here, in Feb.,18,1869, and continuing it until his death. He was a member of Nunda Post, G A R, and carried $3,000 insurance in the M W A, which order buried him with their honors, other Camps and Nunda posts assisting with their presence in large numbers. The funeral was held Sunday in the Cong. Church, Rev. W G. Johnson, of Peterson, Iowa, preaching the funeral sermon, and the remains were interred in the Algonquin Cemetery. He was one of our most esteemed citizens, and his loss we all deeply feel.
